The Diary of a University Cheerleader

Hey guys,

With the end of term fast approaching November has been an extremely busy month for the Tigers. All training is well underway and each team is working extremely hard to prepare for their first performance in January. We recently announced all of the important information for our annual showcase Odyssey!

Odyssey is an opportunity for all of our athletes to display their routines to friends, family and a panel of judges for our competition teams. In previous years our showcase has been extremely successful, so much so that this year it’s even bigger and better than before. We invite teams across the UK to come and perform with us as well as performances from other teams at NTU. This year our showcase will be on Saturday 26th January and tickets will be available to buy from January 1st online and from members of NTU Cheerleading.

November was also another successful month for our charity work. One of our athletes ran a project to raise money for NTU’s John Van Geest Cancer Research Centre. We had another themed training session to raise money by wearing anything with glitter! Alongside this our President and Secretary organised donation boxes for Operation Christmas Child. For this our stunt groups wrapped a shoe box in Christmas paper and then filled it with toys, practical items, books and fun treats to send off to those in less fortunate circumstances! Lots of groups got involved and really enjoyed helping.

With such a large team now this year we have decided to implement Team Captains in order to help organise each squad. Each team had people put themselves forward for the role and their respective coaches and captains chose the best candidate. Team Captains are responsible for keeping their squad motivated at each training session, chasing payments for kit and subs as well as helping our Marketing and Communications Officer by sending content from each session to keep our social media looking good. The Tigers also award an athlete each week with Cheer Hun Tuesday, to recognise their hard work and commitment to the team. Team captains will also nominate a member of their squad each week to be recognised. One of our captains reported that after starting with a brand new squads everyone has worked hard together to start learning new things. They can now perform pyramids, basket, cradle, log rolls and have learnt two short dances. The team is working really hard to progress and everyone is enjoying it so much!

As well as our regular social events we held a welcome event so everyone could get to know each other. As we have previously done we held a Pizza and Prosecco night at Be At One which was a fantastic event with a great turn out. It was a great opportunity for new and returning members to all mix and get to know each other. Our fantastic Social Secretaries have even more events in the works before the end of term.

Each year NTU holds a This Girl Can week to promote female empowerment and involvement in sports and activities. Our members got involved by supporting another predominantly female sport at their home match on our Clifton Campus. Some of our competition teams even wore pink to training to support This Girl Can.
